Everyone remembers the music from their
teenage years. For Tom Brusky, those years were 1983-1989, and what an
era of music it was! Tom spent well
over a hundred hours in his studio meticulously and painstakingly
recreating four
memorable
pop songs from this time period.
"Back to the '80s" is a vocal-centered production featuring an
exceptional lineup of singers from all around the country. Each song
was
carefully paired with the right vocalist who could capture the magic of
the original release over 35 years ago.
You
Got
It All — written
by Rupert Holmes and recorded by the Jets in 1985
What
makes
this song
so memorable is the straightforward, innocent-sounding vocal of
Elizabeth Wolfgramm, who was only 13 years old when she recorded it. To
recapture that sound, Tom turned to professional singer
and
certified voice teacher Sydney Burris of
Austin, TX, who is one-half of the 1980s-styled recording
project, Goons.
I Wanna
Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) —
written
by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, and recorded by Whitney Houston
in 1987
There
aren't many vocalists who can
deliver the raw
energy and
emotion of Whitney Houston, but after weeks of searching, Tom finally
found that talent in Josie Day of
San Diego, CA, who hit all the high notes with power and range to
spare. Josie currently fronts the popular, new Whitney Houston
tribute show, Celebrating Whitney.
Look
Away — written by
Diane Warren
and recorded by the band Chicago
in 1988
Chicago,
the quintessential pop ballad band of the 1980s, recorded this song as
a power ballad. Tom felt the song could be more effective with the
power removed from the instrumentation, so he created an all-acoustic
arrangement played at a slower tempo. Indianapolis-based
Christian artist Aaron J Robinson delivers a
stunningly beautiful vocal
performance.
(I've
Had) the Time of
My
Life —
written by Franke Previte, John
DeNicola, and Donald Markowitz, and recorded by Bill Medley and
Jennifer Warnes in 1987 for the soundtrack to Dirty Dancing
The soundtrack to Dirty Dancing provided
some of the most memorable "feel good" music of the 1980s. To find the
ideal vocalists to cover this classic song from that
soundtrack, Tom didn't have to look far. In fact, he didn't even have
to go outside his native polka
circuit! Abby (Broeniman) Kramer of Appleton, WI and Dan Tutsch of
Milwaukee, WI are the featured
singers.
The purpose of this EP is quite simple — to give you a much-needed
break from this digitally-obsessed, modern world. Close your
social media apps, mute your incoming texts, kick back in your chair,
and
reacquaint yourself with four unforgettable songs from a
bygone era that were passionately recreated by a musician who was there.
